ID Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes and can be very costly to sort out, both in time and money. The best way to deal with this situation is to avoid it in the 1st place and a good way to defend yourself against it is to invest in a paper shredder.
To avoid thieves sorting through your rubbish and gaining vaulable information, you should routinely shred any bills, statements or other documents with personal information instead of just chucking them in the bin. There are various levels of security when it comes to shredders, and you should aim for a shredder with a minimum of DIN 3.
- DIN 1 (GENERAL) - Shreds an sheet of A4 into about 40 strips (eg. up to 12mm strips)
- DIN 2 (INTERNAL) - Shreds an sheet of A4 into about 100 strips (eg. up to 6mm strips)
- DIN 3 (CONFIDENTIAL) - Shreds paper into very narrow strips under 2mm or Cross-Cut creates confetti like particles.
- DIN 4 (SECRET) - Cross Cut shredders only, with pieces < 60sq. mm
- DIN 5 (TOP SECRET) - Cross Cut shredders only, with pieces < 20sq. mm (typically used by the military)
