Paper shredders are becoming more important both for consumers and businesses, as personal and corporate identity theft is increasing dramatically year on year. Businesses also have all of the traditional security concerns to deal with for sensitive documents as well as newer regulations on the handling of personal data.
When choosing a shredder, there are two main considerations that need to be taken into account. The first is to choose the required security level (a full list of these is shown below). Then you need to consider the quantity of documents you will be shredding, both over time and also in one go. If you have a lot of documents to shred then it is much easier to buy a heavy duty shredder that can shred 30-40 sheets in one go than one that can only shred 5 at a time.

Shredder security levels:
DIN 1 (GENERAL) - Shreds an sheet of A4 into about 40 strips (eg. up to 11.8mm strips)
DIN 2 (INTERNAL) - Shreds an sheet of A4 into about 100 strips (eg. up to 5.8mm strips)
DIN 3 (CONFIDENTIAL) - Shreds paper into very narrow strips under 2mm or Cross-Cut creates confetti like particles (max 3.9x50mm).
DIN 4 (SECRET) - Cross Cut shredders only, with pieces < 60sq. mm
DIN 5 (TOP SECRET) - Cross Cut shredders only, with pieces < 20sq. mm (typically used by the military)
HS Level 6 (MAXIMUM SECURITY) - Proprietry standard above and beyond DIN 5, 1x5mm particles
